Teaching Reading



This week was very interesting and I hope that the other weeks that come will be most. This week I learned how to teach reading in class. The professor explained that to teach reading we need to focus in the reading objective separately. If the objective is to understand the reading or if the objective is pronunciation of words and reading pace. 
If the objective of the reading is comprehension, it is not necessary to read aloud, but if the objective is pronunciation, the student need to read aloud and is not necessary to ask questions to them.
We also used the program ULTIMATE READER that will help us to improve our reading speed and our reading comprehension . 
Also I liked to learn different activities that we can develop in class during pre-reading stage, during reading, and after reading. This topic was very helpful to me.

    Of the activities and concepts that you learned about in the reading sessions, which seemed most useful to you in your teaching context? Did any activities or concepts seem not-so-useful? How do you want to use this information when you return o your Ss in Panama? Are there any changes that you'd like to make with regards to your reading instruction?

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the reading sessions we had last week. I think it is great that you took the time to analyze the reading strategies and to PRACTICE them. It makes me happy to know that you understand the importance of going "from reader to reading teacher". Your self-awareness is already a great first step. Congratulations!

Day 4 of observation in Thurman G. Smith Elementary School.

Thursday, March 1st, 2018 The use of technology in class surprised me. All the students in class owned their own personal laptop. They used it to practice math in class, to look for information and to share information with others. Also, I could observe that the computer could be a distractor in class. Because sometimes some specific students were not paying attention to class and they were playing computer games. The teacher couldn't observe those students for that reason I talked to them that please pay attention. The teacher also used technology to present her classes. She handled in a good way the use of technology in class. Also, I attended the library class. This class was performed at the library. The library teacher read them a short book but the point that caught my attention was the tone of voice and mimic used during the reading. Day 2 of Observation in Thurman G. Smith Elementary School.

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 During this second day, I focused my observation in the classroom management. The management of the class was ordered. Every time the children talked or did not pay attention she called attention to them with attention to getters like "Clap once if you can hear me." Those students who listened quieted down and clapped once. Then she said, "Clap twice if you can hear me." Then more children responded with two claps. Finally, she said, "Clap three times if you can hear me." By this time she had the attention of all her students. Also, I noticed that she had a notebook, where she wrote down the names of students who did not follow the instructions given, they at the end of the week they would not have the extra recess time that those who followed instructions would enjoy.
